Antioxidant Properties
Antioxidants counter the effects of free radicals, which are believed responsible for a variety of illnesses, and also play a role in the cellular damage associated with aging. Researchers said the uva ursi extract -- at a concentration of 100 milligrams per milliliter -- showed total antioxidant activity of 91.85 percent.

Useful in Treating UTIs
Urinary tract infections, or UTIs, occur frequently -- often chronically -- among women of all ages. A review of published studies into the efficacy of existing natural remedies concluded that uva ursi can be effective if used at the first signs of infection and also for short-term preventive therapy.

A Word of Warning
Among the active chemical compounds in uva ursi are arbutin and hydroquinone. The latter can cause serious liver damage, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. For this reason, take uva ursi only for short periods -- five days or less.
